Morocco Off-Road Expedition is a remote and adventurous self-drive 4×4 journey from Merzouga to Foum Zguid across the southern Moroccan Sahara.

This is not a conventional road tour and it is not a passenger 4×4 excursion. Participants hire a suitable 4×4 vehicle and take the wheel themselves, following a highly experienced local desert guide who leads the convoy through remote tracks and changing terrain.

The expedition travels through Taous, Jdayd, Ouzina, Ramlia, Oued Ghris, Sidi Ali Mird, Tagounite, Mhamid, Erg Chigaga and Lake Iriki before reaching Foum Zguid.

Days are about driving, navigation, remote landscapes and the feeling of leaving the paved world behind. Nights are spent outside in tents in the desert rather than in hotels, creating a rawer and more immersive Sahara experience.

Because this is remote terrain, the exact tracks and stopping points may be adapted by the expedition leader according to sand, weather, terrain and local conditions. Safety and the guide’s judgement always take priority.

1Day 1

Day 1 — Merzouga → Taous → Jdayd → Ouzina

The Expedition Begins
Meet the experienced desert tour guide / expedition leader in the Merzouga area for the expedition briefing.

Participants collect or arrive with their hired 4x4 vehicles. Before leaving, the group is briefed on convoy driving, communication, safe following distances and what to expect from the terrain.
Leave the familiar roads around Merzouga behind and head south towards Taous, continuing through the remote desert route towards Jdayd and Ouzina.

The first day introduces drivers to off-road terrain while the expedition leader sets the pace and chooses the safest appropriate tracks.
Stop in the desert for breaks, photographs and time to absorb the landscape before setting up the first outdoor camp.

2Day 2

Day 2 — Ouzina → Ramlia → Oued Ghris

Wake in the desert, have breakfast and prepare the vehicles for another day off-road.
Follow the guide from Ouzina towards Ramlia, travelling through increasingly remote terrain.
Continue towards the Oued Ghris area, following tracks selected by the expedition leader according to current conditions.
The day is centred on the driving experience: changing surfaces, open desert landscapes, isolated areas and the challenge of moving as a convoy through terrain far removed from normal roads.
Breaks are taken as needed, with time for lunch and to enjoy the silence and scale of the Sahara.
Towards evening, select a suitable camping area with the guide and set up tents for the night.

3Day 3

Day 3 — Oued Ghris → Sidi Ali Mird → Tagounite → Mhamid

Across the Remote South
After breakfast and camp breakdown, continue west through the remote desert route.

Follow the expedition leader towards Sidi Ali Mird and onwards in the direction of Tagounite.

The terrain and route may vary, and this is precisely why the expedition is led by someone with extensive knowledge of the Sahara and its tracks.
Continue towards Mhamid, one of the gateways to the deeper desert.
Depending on progress, conditions and the guide’s decision, stop for supplies, fuel or refreshments where required before continuing to the chosen camping location.

Settle into another night outdoors, surrounded by the desert rather than hotel walls.

4Day 4

Day 4 — Mhamid → Erg Chigaga → Lake Iriki

Leave Mhamid and follow the guide deeper into the Sahara towards Erg Chigaga.
This is a major adventure day, combining off-road driving with some of the expedition’s most dramatic desert scenery.
Take time around the Erg Chigaga area to appreciate the dunes, landscape and scale of the Sahara.
Continue across remote terrain towards the Lake Iriki area.
The guide determines the exact line of travel according to conditions and the capability of the convoy.

As evening approaches, establish the final wild camp. Enjoy dinner outdoors and the experience of a night far from urban light and noise.

5Day 5

Day 5 — Lake Iriki → Foum Zguid

Wake for the final morning in the desert and enjoy breakfast before breaking camp.

Begin the last off-road section across the Lake Iriki region towards Foum Zguid.

Follow the expedition leader through the final remote tracks as the landscape gradually changes and the group approaches the end of the crossing.

Arrive in Foum Zguid and conclude the guided self-drive expedition.
Vehicle return, onward transfers or additional accommodation can be arranged separately depending on the final travel plan.

Important info

This is a genuine remote self-drive off-road expedition. Participants should be confident drivers and comfortable following convoy instructions in unfamiliar terrain.

The expedition leader has extensive local knowledge, but desert conditions can change. Tracks, timings, campsites and sections of the route may therefore be modified for safety, weather, sand, terrain, vehicle or local operational reasons.

Participants must follow the expedition leader’s instructions while travelling off-road. Safety takes priority over maintaining an exact planned route.

A proper 4x4 is required. The vehicle must be legally permitted and suitably insured for the intended use under the rental agreement.

Wild camping means facilities may be basic. Travellers should be comfortable with outdoor conditions, dust, temperature changes and limited access to conventional facilities.

Final vehicle requirements, driving eligibility, emergency arrangements, communications, camping equipment, meals, support arrangements and insurance requirements must be confirmed with the local operator before the product is sold.
